PREASSIGNMENT

PART 1

 READ Chapter 1 in A Preface to Philosophy and answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper.   These will be turned in on our first weekend session.

 1)     What characterizes a philosophical problem?

 2)     Who is a philosopher?

 3)     What is logical incompatibility?

In addition, there are some study questions on page 18 in A Preface to Philosophy.  Please sketch out rough answers to as many of these questions as you can for discussion during our first weekend.

A Preface to Philosophy (Woodhouse, Wadsworth 5th ed., 1994 )

 

DESCRIPTION:

Survey of modern thought, including Descartes, Dewey, Russell, Freud, James, Camus, Thoreau, and many others.  Discussion of positivism, idealism, romanticism, existentialism and how these models have influenced the 20th Century and the Information Age.

 

GOALS:

1.    To learn to develop one's own philosophical thinking

2.    To develop and use the art of philosophical dialogue

3.    To become acquainted with the conceptual framework of modern thought

4.    To cover the relevant philosophical trends from the Renaissance to the present

5.    To assist students in discovering and recovering philosophy in the Twentieth Century through examination and discussion of Rationalism, Idealism, Romanticism, Positivism, Existentialism, and American and Continental philosophical models

6.     To understand the multidimensional , multiethnic, and multicultural relevance of philosophy and the philosophical method
